About Oak Frames

about oak frmes

The green oak frame is in an ancient tradition all around Europe but especially here in England. It is made using very fresh timber with a high water content (green). The frame dries and seasons as the years pass and as it shrinks it pulls the joins together ever-tighter, giving the building its unique character. The joins are fixed with pre-seasoned oak pegs, drilled and hammered in tightly, and the structure is reinforced with concealed metal pegs. We guarantee you that all of our joins are of the highest quality: neat, tidy and permanent.

Our standard size frame utilises 3x6” wall-plates on all posts and a 6x6” top-plate, held secure by at least two curved braces per post. These braces are one of the most readily identifiable features of oak-framed buildings. Roof rafters are usually made from locally-sourced soft wood but oak rafters are also commonly employed.

Once the frame is completed it is then cladded with feather-boarded oak or your choice of soft wood. As an additional feature, (bricks/windows etc ??). Adapting your oak-frame building to fit in with its surroundings and “connect” with its environment is one of our primary concerns, and we are well experienced in techniques of artificial maturation to give the impression of a long-standing structure.
